Instruments experience the trip too
Cars and buses can become much hotter or colder than the outside air. Instruments contain wood, metal, glue, pads, cork, finishes, strings, and fitted moving parts that respond differently to temperature and humidity.
Sudden changes can affect tuning and playability. In some instruments—especially wooden woodwinds and string instruments—they can contribute to cracks, open seams, or shifted parts.
Keep the instrument with people
Do not leave an instrument in a parked car or trunk when it can come indoors.
Direct sunlight can heat a case quickly. Cold can make materials contract and can leave the instrument far below room temperature.
During travel:
- keep the case closed and latched;
- place it where it cannot slide or be crushed;
- avoid heating vents and direct sun;
- never treat the case as a seat or luggage platform;
- bring it inside promptly.
Follow school and transportation rules for large instruments.
Let cold instruments adjust gradually
After entering a warm building, resist the urge to open the case immediately and blow warm air through a very cold wooden instrument.
Keep the case closed while the instrument begins moving toward room temperature. The required time depends on the instrument, case, and conditions.
Ask the teacher or manufacturer for the correct routine. Wooden oboes, clarinets, bassoons, recorders, and string instruments may need particular care.
Do not try to speed warming with a radiator, hair dryer, heater, or very hot room.
Watch moisture
Warm breath creates condensation inside wind instruments. Swab or drain moisture using the approved method after playing.
Allow damp swabs and cloths to dry outside the closed case when instructed. A wet cloth stored beside an instrument can add unwanted moisture and odor.
For string instruments, wipe rosin and surface moisture with the approved clean cloth.
Never force a tight swab through a joint.
Use humidity products only with guidance
Some wooden instruments benefit from controlled humidification in dry conditions. Too little or too much moisture can both create problems.
Use only a product and procedure recommended for that instrument by the teacher, manufacturer, or technician. Do not place a wet household sponge or homemade container in the case.
Do not oil a wooden bore unless qualified guidance specifically calls for it.
Notice warning signs
Tell the teacher or technician about:
- a visible crack or open seam;
- suddenly tight or loose joints;
- changed bridge or string position;
- keys or valves that stop moving normally;
- new buzzing or air leaks;
- pads that remain wet or sticky;
- a case with persistent dampness or odor.
Do not force parts back into position.
Plan performance travel
Check the forecast and travel time. Bring the instrument inside upon arrival and allow enough time for gradual adjustment before tuning.
Temperature changes pitch, so tuning may continue to move as the instrument warms. Follow the director instead of making one extreme adjustment immediately.
Families do not need to become climate scientists. Three habits prevent many problems: keep instruments out of parked vehicles, avoid sudden temperature changes, and follow the care instructions for the specific instrument.
